EPA Will Mandate Tests On Pesticide Chemicals

PLoS One - 4/13/2009. There is an apparent overlap between areas in the USA where the herbicide, atrazine (ATZ), is heavily used and obesity-prevalence maps of people with a BMI over 30. Given that herbicides act on photosystem II of the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts, which have a functional structure similar to mitochondria, we investigated whether chronic exposure to low concentrations of ATZ might cause obesity or insulin resistance by damaging mitochondrial function.

Pesticides Blamed for Some Childhood Brain Cancers
Environmental Health News - 4/7/2009. Little is known conclusively about what causes brain cancer in children, but research studies are consistently finding links to pre-birth pesticide exposure. A new study finds that children who live in homes where their parents use pesticides are twice as likely to develop brain cancer versus those that live in residences in which no pesticides are used. Herbicide use appeared to cause a particularly elevated risk for a certain type of cancer.

Rocket Fuel Chemical Found in Powdered Infant Formula

All 15 brands of powdered infant formula tested by scientists with the federal government's Centers for Disease Control were found to be contaminated with perchlorate, a component of solid rocket fuel, flares, fireworks and some fertilizers. The chemical has been detected in drinking water in 28 states and territories and at low levels in food supplies.
