Maine List Toxics With Eye On Removal
July 20, 2009 (Augusta, ME) (AP) - Maine's environmental commissioner says the state has taken the first step toward phasing out dangerous chemicals in children's toys and household products.
Environmental Protection Commissioner David Littell says Maine has become the first state to compile a list of chemicals to be prioritized for possible elimination. Littell told Maine Public Radio that the targeted chemicals are those which pose the most significant risks, such as carcinogens and reproductive toxics.
Next year, the state will narrow the list to chemicals of the highest priority and then require manufacturers to report which of their products contain those chemicals.
The Legislature ordered the listing of toxic chemicals.
